Sarcocystis spp. (Sarcocystosis)

Sarcocystis spp. are protozoan parasites that infect both animals and humans, causing sarcocystosis. Humans acquire the parasite through the consumption of undercooked meat contaminated with Sarcocystis cysts. The infection can manifest in two forms: intestinal and muscular. Intestinal sarcocystosis often presents with mild gastrointestinal symptoms, while muscular sarcocystosis can cause fever, muscle pain, and weakness due to the presence of cysts in muscle tissue. Severe cases may result in inflammation and tissue damage.

Eliminating Sarcocystis infections through proper cooking of meat and maintaining food safety practices is critical for preventing human sarcocystosis. While antiparasitic treatments are sometimes used, prevention through improved food hygiene remains the most effective strategy. Reducing human infections leads to fewer cases of muscle pain and digestive issues, contributing to overall health and well-being in affected populations.
