Blastocystis hominis is a protozoan parasite found in the gastrointestinal tract of humans and animals. It is associated with blastocystosis, an infection that can cause a wide range of symptoms, including diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, and nausea. Although the exact pathogenic role of Blastocystis hominis is still debated, it is often detected in individuals with gastrointestinal complaints, particularly in regions with poor sanitation. In some cases, the infection may be asymptomatic, while in others, it can contribute to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)–like symptoms.
Treating Blastocystis hominis infections through antiparasitic drugs such as metronidazole can help alleviate gastrointestinal symptoms and restore normal digestive function. Additionally, improving hygiene and sanitation practices can prevent the transmission of the parasite, particularly in areas with inadequate water and waste management.
