Pthirus Pubis (Pubic Lice) – Causes Pediculosis Pubis

Pthirus pubis, commonly known as pubic lice or crabs, are parasitic insects that infest coarse body hair, most often in the genital area, but they can also be found in armpit hair, beards, and eyebrows. Pediculosis pubis refers to the infestation caused by these lice, which is primarily transmitted through sexual contact, although sharing towels, bedding, or clothing can also spread the parasite.

The primary symptom of pediculosis pubis is intense itching in the affected area, caused by an allergic reaction to the lice’s saliva. In some cases, scratching may result in skin irritation, sores, or secondary bacterial infections. In addition to itching, the presence of small, bluish spots at the site of the bites is a common sign of infestation.

Treatment typically involves over-the-counter or prescription topical insecticides, such as permethrin cream or pyrethrin shampoo, which kill the lice. All clothing, bedding, and towels used by the infected person should be washed in hot water and dried at high heat to prevent reinfestation. Since pubic lice are often transmitted through sexual contact, it is essential for sexual partners to be treated simultaneously to avoid reinfection.
