Trichomonas Vaginalis (Causes Trichomoniasis)

Trichomonas vaginalis is a protozoan parasite that causes trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection (STI). The parasite primarily infects the urogenital tract, causing symptoms such as itching, burning, discomfort during urination, and vaginal discharge in women, while men may experience irritation inside the penis, a slight discharge, or no symptoms at all. If left untreated, trichomoniasis can increase the risk of contracting other STIs, including HIV, and can cause complications during pregnancy, such as preterm birth and low birth weight.

Clearing Trichomonas vaginalis from the body with a course of antibiotics, usually metronidazole or tinidazole, results in the quick resolution of symptoms and reduces the risk of long-term complications. Treating both partners is essential to prevent reinfection and improve sexual health. Screening and practicing safe sex, alongside education about STI prevention, significantly reduce the prevalence of trichomoniasis and lead to better reproductive and overall health outcomes, especially in populations at high risk of infection.
